Notes on product and service design for kids.

Getting to Know You

"It's a very ancient saying,
But a true and honest thought,
That if you become a teacher,
By your pupils you'll be taught.”

This quote from Anna and the King gives a good idea of my experience last year when I began the ethnographic research phase for my MA dissertation project. My role was most certainly not that of teacher or preacher, but it is undoubtedly true that what the children I was working with taught me made it possible for me to arrive at my final design – and much more.

Children's Web Searches - Top 100 Search Terms

Symantec recently released a list of the top 100 searches (actually 101 due to ties) performed by children online. The data was gathered through their OnlineFamily.Norton product, a web monitoring and filtering service.

The data was compiled between February 2009 and July 2009 and represents the aggregated readout of 3.5 million searches tracked by the service. While I wish Symantec had released more data (weighted age range and search engine usage statistics come to the top of my mind), I was grateful to have this glimpse into the mind of the connected child.

Kids Experience Design

I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a craftster but lately, as most of my friends are having babies, I’ve been knitting up a storm of baby hats and booties as gifts. I’m struck by how much the design thinking we apply everyday here at frog has percolated into my crafting life.
