Digital lifestyle at the intersection of attention, beauty, productivity, and social web
Earlier this year, my colleague Paul Bradley, Executive Creative Director at frog, put together some slides about design trends for a German newspaper. I thought it might be interesting to revisit them as the year is coming to an end - which of these have "expired" and which are still relevant?

trend evolutions
Robert Ziegler - November 19, 2008
brilliant deck! it inspired me to think about what's next.
some initial 2009 prediction builds based on Paul's ideas:
Social:
user-generated content + social-networking = crowdsourcing which will evolve into co-opted crowdsourcing ("cosourcing"?) (professional dialogues merge with what were primarily individualist amateur dialogues) (whether this will invoke a consolidation of resources and therefore higher production quality remains to be seen...)
compassionate connectedness... disparity can bring charity... issue-centric "UsTube" sites emerge following the success of Obama.com
DIY will make a comeback... in food prep, home repair, cosmetics, even computer upgrades... will sewing re-enter our venacular?
Design:
gestural touchscreens may evolve into gestural "touch me" surfaces, which will be more sensuous (squeeze / rub / shift) than the (cold) neutrality of a MacBook touchpad
(economy-driven) utility + simplicity will win over novelty and technocentricity, which may imply that the organic/randomness trend here becomes marginalized (reserved for objects of luxury) or may merge with the green messaging trend, but the origami trend could be reinforced
things will continue to shrink. (less is more... affordable! environmentally friendly!) (eg. smaller portion Coke bottles, less packaging, more concentrates)
CMF:
decorative finishing trends as a point-of-differentiation or form of personalization may increase for economic rather than aesthetic reasons... would be interesting to see these merge with a DIY trend...
light-as-color will increase: RGB LEDs plus silvered or specially treated transparents and translucents will enable on-demand custom-colored casings for electronics... the next evolutionary step from Artemide's "Metamorfosi"... which may have been the inspiration for Samsung's red glow LCD screen frames and Philips' "Ambilight" HDTVs... longer term, these will evolve from monocolor ambiance into custom pattern-shifting casings.
colors aren't necessarily my forte but I think we'll shift away from purple (the mysterious) to things like sky blue (clarity) and more primary colors, especially in warm palettes (reds, oranges)
inexpensive sustainable (bamboo) and recycled (PET polyester fabrics, shredded/pressure-molded reclaimed waste) materials will emerge as top choices.
"skins" ala concept BMW: skeletal frames with semi-rigid outer coverings...
