On June 23rd the US team needed to beat Algeria in order to advance to the next round. It was the last game of the group round. They had to win it for the fans, for the game of soccer in the US, for the country. They played their hearts out but couldn't find the back of the net. They kept pressing even after a goal was called back. In the 91st minute the goal that they so desperately needed was delivered. Landon Donovan, the star of the team, sealed the deal. It was an epic game with an epic finish. Millions of people around the world saw that miraculous goal.

As we all move closer to the much anticipated opening ceremony of the 2010 World Cup, it's a time when bigger themes than football will surely enter the global conversation.
A theme that comes to mind is the notion that many of the serious problems and challenges that we face on our planet as humans divided by history, race, nationality, politics, social values, religion, and sexual orientation, can all either be accessed, addressed, or even explained by the great sport of football.
